A CLINICAL ANALYSIS OF THE PEDIATRIC BURN PATIENTS





Abstract
From Jan. 1988 to July 1990, 1641 burn patients were admitted to Hangang Sacred Heart Hospital. Among them, 538 patients were under the age of fifteen. In these pediatric burn patients, retrospective study was done for the review of following issues ; age and six distribution, causes of burn, monthly, daily and hourly distribution of accidents, prevalent aria of burn and duration of admission, mortality rate and causes of deaths according to the extents of burn.
The results were as follows ;
1) Children under 15 years old were 32.8% of all admitted burn patients (1641).
2) Males were more frequently affected, and their percentage was 56.9%. 3) The most prevalent age group was between 1 and 2 years old (27.1 % ).
4) The most common cause of burns were scalds(78.4%), followed by flami(19%), contact(1.7%) and electric(1%).
5) Burning accidents were frequently occurred in March and October, on Sunday and at 7 -8PM, 1-2PM and 9-10AM.
6) Lower extremity was most frequently involved (36%), followed by upper extremity (22. 6%), trunk (21.7%), hand (9.7%) and head & nick (9.6%).
7) The mean hospital day was 21.4 days, and days of admission were abruptly prolonged over 40% burn of total body surface.
8) Overall mortality rate was 8.1%(40 cases), and causes of deaths were sipsis(62.5%), respiratory failuri(25%), asphyxia(2.5%), hypovolimic shock(2.5%) and CO intoxication (2.5%).
